Details of forthcoming Ranger Events are as follows:

Intriguing geology, arches & caves, and a hunt for the Faroese sunset shell

Boulder beach, cliff-nesting seabirds, and possibly Puffins

Sunday 27th……………………………………..To the Lighthouse (BOOKING ESSENTIAL - 600341)) Cross to Start Island, and go up the tower with the Lighthouse-keeper

Saturday  2nd……………………………………To the Lighthouse (BOOKING ESSENTIAL - 600341)) Cross to Start Island, and go up the tower with the Lighthouse-keeper    time & place:  3.45  p.m. at the School upper car park

Tuesday 5th……………………………Archaeology minibus trip (BOOKING ESSENTIAL - 600341) 5,000 years explored in 3 hours or so, lunch arranged locally (there’ll be a donation ‘charge’ for this trip)   time & place:  9.00 a.m. School; 9.20 a.m. Loth waiting-room

Sunday 10th……………………………..Whalehead minibus trip (BOOKING ESSENTIAL 600341) Investigate the remaining structures from the secret wartime camp  (there’ll be a donation ‘charge’ for this trip)

Tuesday 12th…………………………………………………………………..Lady to Quoyness
Viking place-names, and a look inside the 5,000 year-old chambered cairn

Monday 18th…………………………………………………………………..Rock-pooling     ( 2 hours or so) Hermit crabs, Anemones, Chitons, & who knows? Buckets & lenses available.
time:  3.30 p.m.     meet:  Ayre’s Rock     more info and booking :  Roderick Thorne 600-341 bring :  wellies

Sunday 24th…..Eday & Sanday visit to North Ronaldsay  (BOOKING ESSENTIAL - 600341) …visiting the Bird Observatory, the new and old Lights…
time & place:  10.30 a.m. Loth waiting-room; returning to Sanday at 5 p.m.    bring ; a snack and drink

Wednesday 27th………………………………………….…………..Bea Sand beachcomb (2 hours or so)
Leisurely sauntering, followed by an examination of the finds. Reference books, bags and lenses provided.
time & place:  1.00 p.m. at the Picnic site by the old Cross kirkyard    bring ; a snack and drink

Saturday 30th……………………………………………………………..Holms of Ire     (2-3 hours or so)
A slippery walk across to both holms, but it’s worth it for the flowers, seals, and seabirds
time:  3.00 p.m. meet:   beyond the gate past Airon  more  info and booking :  Roderick Thorne 600-341 bring  wellies/walking boots, a snack and drink

AS WELL AS THESE ADVERTISED EVENTS, THERE ARE OPPORTUNITIES TO LOOK AT LOCAL MOTHS, TO VISIT THE COMMON (HARBOUR) SEAL PUPS, TO SEE STORM PETRELS AT NIGHT, AND TO SEE SOME OF THE ISLAND’S MARINE LIFE FROM DRY LAND WITH THE AID OF A SUB-SEA ROV (Remote Operating Vehicle) .
