The Surgery

Flebister House is situated in Lady, the village in the centre of the island. It was erected by subscription of the population to house the island doctor in the 19th century and now comprises 2 consulting rooms, a waiting room with web access for patients, a dispensary and an interview room for visiting therapists. VC facilities have been installed to allow remote consultation where appropriate. Wheelchair access is also available.

Emergencies and Out of Hours

These services are provided on island by the Doctor and Nurse who are on duty 24/7. Together with the SAS ambulance driver and the volunteer responders they also provide a response to more serious emergencies such as heart cases and road traffic accidents, while transfer by helicopter to Kirkwall or Aberdeen is awaited.

Appointments
Surgery appointments should be made during Office Hours, please ring 600221. If you think you will need more than one appointment please ask for a longer period when you make the appointment.

For investigation and also monitoring of some hospital and GP treatments

Child Immunisations

Chiropody
There is a podiatry surgery every few weeks.

Contraceptive Services
Barrier contraception, the pill and injectable contraception are provided and implants and coils are available by referral to Kirkwall.

Counterweight Clinic
This is run by our Nurses.

Dispensing
Medication needed immediately is dispensed at the surgery. Repeat medication requests are forwarded to the pharmacy of your choice in Kirkwall and the medication is sent out securely packaged via the ferry and haulage service. For this reason repeat medication should be ordered a week in advance. You can email in your repeat order to This email address is being protected from spambots. Collections must be made from Monday to Friday during office hours. 

ECG and Spirometry

General and Emergency Medical Services
Assessment, diagnosis and treatment of new illness and continuing treatment of chronic problems including review clinics re asthma, COPD, heart and stroke disease, diabetes etc. The range of treatments provided is sometimes a little more extensive than usual because of the difficulty in accessing Mainland services.

Health Promotion
If you are aged between 40–64 there is a programme called ‘Keep Well’ where you can have a health check (call the surgery to make an appointment if you are interested) and also in routine practice

Home Visits
These are provided if medically appropriate. Please telephone before 10.00am if possible to request a home visit.

Insurance Certificates etc
If you require any forms completed for an insurance company etc., we are happy to do this.  Please leave the form at the reception and allow 5 working days for completion.  A charge may be made for this service. In some cases an insurance company or solicitor may ask for medical details about you. We will only do this if you have given us written permission.

Preconception advice
Routine low risk deliveries occur in the maternity unit at the Balfour Hospital.

Medical Certificates  
If you are off for less than 7 days you can sign yourself off by filling in a self-certification form supplied by your employer.  For longer than 7 days see a doctor

Minor Surgery
Removal of skin lumps and treatment of minor injuries.

Temporary Residents
If you are only staying in the area for a short time, up to 3 months, you can register with the practice as a temporary patient.

Travel advice and immunisation
Holiday advice and immunisation programmes can be provided using the regularly updated Travax database. Allow plenty of time [2 months] for supplies to be ordered and immunisations to be carried out, particularly if travelling outside Europe. Let the receptionist know this is what the appointment is for and some of the preparation can be done before you arrive.

Visiting counsellor
A trained counselor from OACAS visits every few weeks.
