The heritage centre is a new visitor attraction for 2009 housed in the former craft shop at Ayres Rock. The centre is a temporary facility and has been created by a newly formed group comprising of representatives from the 4 main Island organisations and individuals with an interest from the wider community. The group’s long term aim is to create a permanent centre in a larger building on the island, with the temporary centre providing an outlet to display the islands rich heritage whilst the longer term plans are achieved.
Static displays will be changed throughout the summer, providing interest to both visitors andĀ members of the local community. Sanday’s heritage stretches from neolithic to the modern day and with input from the Island Ranger, the natural heritage will not be overlooked. Although the facility will be open every day throughout the summer for visitors to browse the static displays, it is hoped that the centre will be staffed during Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday afternoons, at which time recent history caught on film and soundĀ recordings will be made available to visitors. Admission to the centre will be free of charge, however a fund is being set up to contribute to the significant costs of providing a permanent centre, to which donations will be gratefully received.
