Sanday Fiddle Club

The Club is a group of approximately thirty people (ages five to fifty-something), which meets every Monday afternoon to rehearse and perform fiddle music in a wide variety of styles, with the emphasis on continuing the tradition of folk music. The group performs regularly in Sanday and has given concerts in Kirkwall, Eday and Stronsay. We have held very successful Summer Schools tutored by eminent musicians from the south. In 2007 we began a collaboration with the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama , which continues in 2008, with plans for another Summer School.

In 2005, the Fiddle Club, together with the Sanday Singers, gave two performances of Handel’s Messiah. We gave one on our neighbouring island of Stronsay, followed the next day by a performance on Sanday.

2008 saw the two groups join forces again, together with members of the Orkney Camerata, to perform Vivaldi’s Gloria. The performance and supporting programme were well received by an enthusiastic audience at the school.
