The Sanday Development Trust was launched in March 2004, prior to Sanday’s inclusion in Initiative at the Edge 
in October that year. The Trust is a company limited by guarantee and has charitable status, and replaces the Sanday Development Group that was first formed in 1986.
The Trust exists to encourage and support local people to take responsibility for the renewal of their own community. The Trust belongs to its members. Directors on the Board are simply ordinary members who have stepped forward and volunteered their time for the Trust.
At the AGM everyone is invited to help to identify the priorities for the following year in order to produce an annual plan to which the Trust works. Other ideas and issues do arise as the year progresses, and some can be pursued if there is particular urgency and the capacity to do so.
If someone has an issue or an enterprising idea that falls within the Trust’s remit (as opposed to other bodies, such as the Sanday Community Council, OIC, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, the Scottish Government) and is prepared to volunteer their time to lead or join a project group to pursue it, they are given every encouragement and support. If the Trust is not the appropriate forum to take the item forward, we try to point people in the right direction.
At all times the Trust welcomes interested members to offer their time to work on a project, to attend meetings and to stand for election to the Board.
